Types of Diabetes

Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus -- IDDM (type I)

When an individual has Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, IDDM, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin.  Insulin is a hormone that communicates to the fat, muscle, and liver cells to take glucose from the blood plasma to the interior of the cells to then be utilized for cellular respiration. Because of the deficit, individuals with IDDM must take injections of insulin in order to manage blood glucose levels. [6]

Type 1 diabetes was originally known as insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes in childhood. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed during childhood but can happen at any age. Multiple factors can cause type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes has a strong correlation with genetics. It has also been demonstrated that exposure to certain viruses can increase the chances of type 1 diabetes. [4]
