EMS Providers work in a variety of places that are "not the safest" environments. Despite "Scene Safety/BSI" being the first components of a scene size-up, we constantly encounter situations that become dangerous. ALS providers attempting to start Intravenous access and administer medications can be injured during these situations:
- Altered mental status
- Combative patients
- Unsafe scene
- Moving ambulance
- Lack of workplace safety and engineering controls
The EMS is an unpredictable hodgepodge of constantly changing environments. We go to work each day not knowing what the calls will bring.
