Always use soft restraints, this includes leather restraints only when they have a soft padding inside. If police use handcuffs to secure the patient, police must accompany the patient inside the ambulance. Having an officer follow behind in a vehicle is not a sufficient substitute. In handcuffing a patient being transported by ambulance, police must handcuff the patient’s hands in the front or to the stretcher, but in no event behind the patient’s back. |
