MA OEMS STP 2.4 Behavioral Emergencies
Massachusetts OEMS implemented a Behavioral Emergencies (2.4) and Behavioral Emergencies: Restraint (2.5) protocol in the latest version.  Prior to this there were no specific designated guidelines pertaining to patient restraint.  These protocols supersede MA OEMS A/R 5-500.

In short, protocol 2.4 Behavioral Emergencies discusses
  • Routine patient care
  • Designating one EMT for the patient and the other to the scene
  • Provide reassurance by acknowledging the crisis and validating the patient's feelings
  • Monitor your behavioral tones and body movements
  • Attempt de-escalation techniques
  • Move into Protocol 2.5 Behavioral Emergencies: Restraint
