Needle Length
- The newly recommended needle size and length to perform a chest decompression is a 14 gauge 3 ¼” needle. Paramedics may also attach a syringe onto the back of the needle and have 1-2ml of saline attached. This way when the tension pneumothorax is relieved, the EMS provider will see bubbles in the syringe and verify that they are in the correct place.
