- Listen to the patient’s concerns and fears
- Grant permission to complete tasks prior to going to the hospital, within reason
- Be honest and utilize positive feedback
- About choices, procedures and treatment options
- Bribe the patient
- Food, drink (non-alcoholic), cigarette, etc…prior to transport
- This helps build trust for when you’re locked in the back of a tiny ambulance with a potentially violent patient
- Call them by name
- It is easier to be violent when anonymous
- Utilize family and friends if available
- Have family explain acceptable and not acceptable behavior
