  • Listen to the patient’s concerns and fears
    • Grant permission to complete tasks prior to going to the hospital, within reason
  • Be honest and utilize positive feedback
    • About choices, procedures and treatment options
  • Bribe the patient
    • Food, drink (non-alcoholic), cigarette, etc…prior to transport
    • This helps build trust for when you’re locked in the back of a tiny ambulance with a potentially violent patient
  • Call them by name
    • It is easier to be violent when anonymous
  • Utilize family and friends if available
    • Have family explain acceptable and not acceptable behavior
