The management of the stimulant overdose will be dependent upon the type of substance involved. Many of the treatments for EMS providers focus on maintaining an adequate airway, breathing and circulation. Always remember that the patient may become suddenly agitated and therefore dangerous. Attempt to keep the patient calm and decrease outside environmental stimulation whenever possible. Understand that the more agitated the patient gets, the more catecholamines (the body’s own stimulants) are released, increasing the cyclical increased agitation event. Suspect amphetamine intoxication in any patient that is agitated or psychotic with elevated blood pressure, heart rate, and diaphoresis. Be alert that severely intoxicated patients may suddenly decompensate and go into cardiopulmonary arrest, especially if struggling against restraints. [27] | |
