Toxicological Emergencies

Naloxone Administration
Over the past several years’ nasal Naloxone administration has been widely used by the lay public and EMS providers at the First Responder and Basic Life Support levels.  Always refer to your local protocol, medical director or service agreement for the proper use guidelines and training.  Intranasal Narcan can be administered intranasally in 2mg – 4mg dosing and repeated as necessary depending upon local protocol.   Many agencies are also carrying intramuscular “auto-injector” Narcan for administration as well.  Regardless of the route of administration of Narcan, EMS providers must provide bag-mask-ventilations upon the initial discovery of respiratory depression.
