They are used not only for sedation, but also for the treatment of anxiety. Benzodiazepines are relatively safer than many other sedative-hypnotic medications in that respiratory depression occurs only at a much higher dose than the therapeutic dose. They do, however, potentiate the respiratory depression of other sedatives. As with other sedative-hypnotics, tolerance and dependence develop quickly, and withdrawal can be dangerous [19][20]
