Alcohol behaves like other sedatives but has some distinct characteristics. Chronic alcohol abuse damages all organ systems, especially the liver, brain, heart, and GI tract. It causes a vast array of health and social problems.

- Involved in more trauma and environmental emergencies than any other drug,
- 3 million deaths every year result from harmful use of alcohol, this represent 5.3 % of all deaths worldwide. [23]
- Widely available and comes in many different forms,
- Universally taken orally.
