Deflation of the cuff is not advised during the first 48 hours after surgery, and any tube changes within seven days are usually performed by the surgeon. Complications of the procedure include:
- Thyroid injury
- Hemorrhage
- Injury to the laryngeal nerves
- Air leaks, including pneumothorax, subcutaneous emphysema, and mediastinal emphysema
- Tracheoesophageal fistula
- Cardiac arrest
- Malposition of tracheostomy – too high or low (4)
