Tracheostomy Tube Management for BLS Providers

Pulse oximetry
Pulse oximetry is an essential monitoring tool when managing a patient after tracheotomy. Using optical plethysmography and spectrophotometry, the oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin is determined by recording changes in blood volume and measurement of the amount of light absorbed after light of two known wavelengths passes across the arterial vascular bed and is measured by a photodetector to determine the amount of light transmitted to the photodetector.
