Tracheostomy Tube Management for BLS Providers

Humidification
Humidification is recommended for oxygen delivery by the tracheostomy mask, in cases of mechanical ventilation, with respiratory infection and increased secretions, or for the management of thick secretions. (8)

A heat moisture exchanger has hygroscopic paper on the surface that absorbs moisture in expired air, and upon inspiration the air passes over the paper surface and warms the air that enters the airway. It is recommended for all patients with tracheostomy tubes, and fits directly onto the tracheostomy tube, but must be changed each day or as needed for a wet or blocked filter. If the heat moisture exchanger has an oxygen port, it is suitable for low flow oxygen. You should not wet the filter prior to use. (9)

There are bibs for tracheostomies that trap moisture from expired air and moisturize warm air passing into the airway. These bibs are normally washable, but should be thrown away each month.
