Tracheostomy Tube Management for BLS Providers

Emergency Tracheostomy Removal
If there is any sign of airway obstruction that cannot be resolved immediately, the inner cannula should be removed.

In the event of accidental decannulation, the patient’s tracheostomy tube should be reinserted immediately. If you are unable to reinsert the tube, you may occlude the stoma and assist ventilations by BLS means using a bag-valve-mask. It is for these reasons that an emergency inner cannula or tracheostomy tube should be at bedside at all times. (15)
