| The tracheostomy tube may become dislodged or displaced from a variety of reasons including routine tracheostomy care or suctioning, and if this happens, the tracheostomy tube should be replaced immediately. As with every goal in EMS our first priority is to maintain an adequate airway and ensure adequate breathing. This may be achieved by replacing the tracheostomy tube, using a new sterile tracheostomy tube, or by reinsertion of the original tracheostomy tube. If this does not occur, then you can occlude the stoma and utilize a bag-valve-mask to ventilate the patient at a rate of 10 to 12 breaths per minute until the patient can receive a higher level of care if applicable. | | | | |
