| The routine use of 0.9% Saline being instilled directly into the tracheostomy tube is not recommended diluting secretions. In the event of severe, thick mucous it would be acceptable to instill 0.5ml of saline to assist with the dilution of the mucous or to assist in stimulating a cough to help clear secretions. (34)
