Tracheostomy Tube Management for BLS Providers

Oropharyngeal Suctioning
Using either a rigid or flexible catheter, you can suction the oropharynx and laryngeal area. A Yankauer suction tip is a rigid tip that conforms to the contour of the oropharynx. Attach the catheter to the tubing attached to the suction canister, which is attached to a vacuum regulator. The vacuum regulator controls the negative pressure utilized during suctioning. The average pressure used in adults is between 100 and 120 mmHg. (1)
