Complications associated with suctioning include hypoxia, hypoxemia and cardiac arrhythmias. Preoxygenation of patients who must undergo suctioning is recommended. Hypotension or hypertension may occur. Atelectasis, mucosal trauma, pulmonary hemorrhage and bleeding, or infection can be the result of careless technique.
