| It is likely that within the field of EMS you will come across a child with a tracheostomy, as children with serious medical conditions often survive now as a result of tracheostomy. These children are often cared for at home and some of them attend school. Although a tracheostomy is often life saving for children who need airway protection and respiratory support, there is high morbidity and mortality associated with tracheostomy.
