Tracheostomy Tube Management for BLS Providers

First Week Postoperatively
After tracheostomy is performed in a child, within 3 days to a week the tube should be changed, and an experienced healthcare provider should perform the first change to ensure that a tract has formed. Before the first tube change, the tracheal tube may be sutured to the child from inside the stoma, with sutures that are anchored to the tracheal wall on each side of the stoma. These are called stay sutures and will be removed when the tracheostomy is replaced for the first time.
