Tracheostomy Tube Management for BLS Providers

Routine Pediatric Tracheostomy Care
Routine tracheostomy care is done twice daily and as needed. The tracheostomy tube and stoma will need to be cleaned daily. Irrigation of the tracheostomy tube is necessary three times each day, or if the tube has a disposable inner cannula, it should be changed daily. If there is not a disposable inner cannula, the inner cannula must be cleaned after a new clean cannula is inserted.

Tracheostomy care is performed using clean techniques, but changing the tracheostomy tube is a sterile procedure. The outer cannula should be replaced each month (or 60 to 90 days, depending upon the clinician’s preference). (14)
