Allergic Reactions and Anaphylaxis

Distributive Shock
  • Anaphylaxis is a form of distributive shock that, in short, results from excessive vasodilation and impaired distribution of blood flow throughout the body. [17]
  • Cardiac output (CO) and Systemic Vascular Resistance (SVR) are the determinants of tissue perfusion.
    • Cardiac output = Heart Rate x Stroke Volume
    • Systemic Vascular Resistance is dependent on the blood viscosity vessel length & diameter. [18]
  • As we will discuss, during an anaphylactic reaction, cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance will be changed and, if left untreated, death ensues.
