Antihistamines
  • This is the second line after Epinephrine within the ALS Paramedic scope of practice
  • Antihistamines block the effects of histamine by blocking the receptors
  • They do not displace the histamine already bound to the receptors
  • The standard is Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
    • It is non-selective and blocks both H1 & H2 receptors
  • The dose is 25-50 mg IV or IM
  • Administer slowly if given IV
  • Pediatric dose is 1mg/kg to a maximum single dose of 50mg IV or IM
    • IM = Intramuscular
    • IV = Intravenous
