Allergic Reactions and Anaphylaxis

Data Collection
  • Obtaining data regarding the exact number of people who are affected by anaphylaxis is difficult.
  • Some people who experience an anaphylactic reaction die during their first reaction to a substance, leaving no history of anaphylaxis.
  • A recent review in the Archives of Internal Medicine examined the epidemiology of anaphylaxis in the United States.
  • The authors obtained prevalence estimates of the four major types of anaphylaxis, namely:
    1. food,
    2. drugs,
    3. latex and
    4. insect stings.
  • From this they estimated the number of people at risk for anaphylaxis in the United States, and estimated the number of deaths occurring per year from anaphylaxis.
  • The data can be found in the tables on the following slides.[4]
