Racemic Albuterol versus Levalbuterol
  • Racemic albuterol is a 50/50 mixture of R-albuterol and S-albuterol isomer
  • R-albuterol isomer producse bronchodilation with the known side effects of tachycardia
  • S-albuterol was thought to have no effect, but recent research suggests it contributes to a histamine and inflammatory response
  • Levalbuterol is the R-albuterol isomer only
  • It is thought that Levalbuterol is more effective at half the dose of racemic albuterol
  • Multiple studies have been inconclusive on this issue [11]
