- Racemic albuterol is a 50/50 mixture of R-albuterol and S-albuterol isomer
- R-albuterol isomer producse bronchodilation with the known side effects of tachycardia
- S-albuterol was thought to have no effect, but recent research suggests it contributes to a histamine and inflammatory response
- Levalbuterol is the R-albuterol isomer only
- It is thought that Levalbuterol is more effective at half the dose of racemic albuterol
