Research on prehospital administration of steroids

In 1996 the New York City EMS protocol was instituted; this allowed EMS personnel to administer 125mg intravenous methylprednisolone as an option after discussion with a medical control physician

  • Chart review of 219 patients diagnosed with asthma
  • Over a 2 year period
  • Of the patients who received prehospital steroids, none resulted in admission
  • This study was a small sample size but demonstrates a potential for improved patient outcomes [25]
