Maternal and Fetal Anatomy and Physiology
The amnion is an avascular structure that is the innermost fetal membrane, contiguous with the amniotic fluid. The amnion provides the strength of the fetal membrane, and it is important that the amnion remain intact for a successful pregnancy. The amniotic fluid itself is swallowed and breathed by the fetus, then urinated back into the amniotic sac. It is also transferred intramembranously to establish fluid balance.
