Diagnosis of Spontaneous Abortion
Threatened abortion is defined as bleeding before 20 weeks gestation. A quarter of all pregnant women experience spotting or bleeding early in the pregnancy, and of those, one half will miscarry. However, expectant management is indicated if fetal heart tones are detectable, and a clinician can make a diagnosis with respect to the need for surgical evacuation (D&C).
