Second and Third Trimester Emergencies
When diagnosing placenta previa, the diagnosis is largely suspected with painless vaginal bleeding after the 30th week of gestation. An ultrasound may be performed to determine the location of the placenta: it should be a transvaginal ultrasound.

Treatment of placenta previa usually involves bed rest if the bleeding is minor and inconsistent. Inpatient admission is indicated for maternal and fetal monitoring for either maternal or fetal distress. If the mother is Rh negative, then Rho(D) immune globulin should be administered for any third trimester bleeding.
