Risk factors for abruptio placentae include hypertension, a prior history of abruptio placenta; cigarette smoking; cocaine use; premature rupture of membranes; multiparity and multiple gestations. 

Treatment of placental abruption in mild cases includes bed rest as an inpatient. Because the uterus is irritated, delivery may occur very rapidly, but if the patient develops hemodynamic instability, an immediate cesarean section should be performed.
