A feared complication of multiple gestations is the fusion of the umbilical cords, which may result in "twin-twin transfusion syndrome" with one twin receiving an inadequate blood supply, with subsequent ischemia, and increased risk of fetal complications.
A multiple gestation should be detected early in a mother who is receiving consistent prenatal care. The height of the uterine fundus will be large for the estimated gestation age, and there may be more than one fetal heart tone on auscultation. Ultrasound will detect two or more gestational sacs. |
