Multiple gestations result in a higher incidence of complications, which include hypertension, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm labor with respect to the mother. Fetal complications include malpresentation, abruptio placentae, placenta previa and premature rupture of membranes, birth trauma, cerebral palsy, respiratory distress syndrome and intrauterine growth retardation.
