It is worth mentioning the complications of pregnancy experienced by some mothers with chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus. Gestational diabetes mellitus is diagnosed when glucose intolerance of new onset begins during pregnancy, after 24 weeks gestation. On history and physical examination, the patient is likely to be asymptomatic with unremarkable findings. Routine prenatal lab studies will reveal a fasting glucose of greater than 126 mg/dL, or an abnormal glucose tolerance test may be performed in mothers at risk between 24 and 28 weeks gestation.
