Care of the fetus includes monitoring with fetal ultrasound and echocardiogram, with emphasis on the third trimester of pregnancy, in order to diagnose any abnormalities of growth, cardiac or neurologic systems. 

In case of poor maternal glucose control or other maternal complications, an assessment of fetal lung maturity should be performed and corticosteroids administered to hasten maturity of fetal lungs prior to an early delivery.
