| After 34 weeks gestation, and if lung maturity is proven by analysis of amniotic fluid, expectant management is recommended. If, however, there is nonreassuring fetal testing, infection, or a threat to the health of the mother, empiric ampicillin should be given before delivery. Beyond 37 weeks, there is no benefit to utilizingtocolytics and glucocorticosteroids.
Complications of preterm labor include fetal respiratory distress syndrome (hyaline membrane disease) and an increased risk of other neonatal complications. The probability of preterm labor can be estimated by measuring the cervical length with ultrasound. |
