Mothers whose hypertension is preexistent should be treated for blood pressure greater than 140/90 with labetalol. A long-acting calcium channel blocker like nifedipine or amlodipine should be used if a second agent is required. [10]
Complications of preeclampsia include oligohydramnios, preterm delivery, or the HELLP syndrome(Hemolysis,Elevated Liver Enzymes and Low Platelets). It may also cause placental abruption, renal insufficiency, encephalopathy, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
Preeclampsia may progress to Eclampsia, which has all the features of preeclampsia with the addition of seizure or stroke. |
