Aftercare
  1. Keep both mother and child warm and in a comfortable position, encouraging the mother to keep the child on her chest.
  2. Replace dirty or wet bedding and clothing, moving it to a different area.
  3. Control of pain may be achieved with an icepack on the vagina, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen.
  4. The mother may have a light snack and a drink.
  5. Encourage the mother to urinate, even if she requires a pan or a cloth that you can place under her, if she is too weak.
  6. Diaper the child, placing the diaper below the umbilical cord.
  7. Infection may be present if the cord is malodorous, and you should clean with rubbing alcohol until the odor is gone.
  8. Summon medical attention or proceed by ambulance to the nearest hospital.
