- Keep both mother and child warm and in a comfortable position, encouraging the mother to keep the child on her chest.
- Replace dirty or wet bedding and clothing, moving it to a different area.
- Control of pain may be achieved with an icepack on the vagina, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen.
- The mother may have a light snack and a drink.
- Encourage the mother to urinate, even if she requires a pan or a cloth that you can place under her, if she is too weak.
- Diaper the child, placing the diaper below the umbilical cord.
- Infection may be present if the cord is malodorous, and you should clean with rubbing alcohol until the odor is gone.
- Summon medical attention or proceed by ambulance to the nearest hospital.
