Diagnosis of Spontaneous Abortion
An incomplete abortion designates a miscarriage where some of the products of conception, such the fetal membranes, are retained. The treatment of choice is surgical evacuation in an unstable patient, but medical management or expectant management may be utilized if the mother prefers and is stable. In the stable patient, studies have shown that expectant management is successful in 82% to 96% of patients. In a stable patient, expectant management is undertaken for two weeks before surgical management is recommended, unless there is concern for infection.
