Endocrine Diabetic Emergencies

On the other hand, if the patient is coherent but refusing transport, the standing orders must be documented on the Patient Care Report (PCR) before leaving:

  • Identifiable reason why the diabetic emergency happened; 
  • Blood sugar – normal range or over 120, post treatment; 
  • Level of consciousness – awake, alert and oriented with a GCS = 15;
  • Recent food intake; 
  • Friend and/or family present to stay with the patient; 
  • Discussion with the patient if possible to contact physician ASAP; 
  • Vital signs within normal limits: 
    • If systolic blood pressure is less than 100, or greater than 160, medical control contact is required
    • If heart rate is less than 60, or greater than 100, medical control contact is required
  • Offer of transport has to be made to the patient.
